How to grow your internet radio audience

Launching is the easy part. Getting people to find your station, and then to come back, takes steady work. None of the following costs much, and all of it compounds over time.

Make it effortless to listen

Every extra step loses listeners. Give people one link that opens straight to a working player on any device. Your Citrus3 radio page does exactly that, and it comes with every plan, so you can share your station the moment it is live without building a website. Put that link in your social profiles, your email signature and anywhere you are mentioned. A QR code pointing at the link works well on posters, stickers and flyers.

Embed the player where people already are

If you have a website, a blog or a community page, add the player to it. Embeddable widgets show your player, what is playing now, upcoming shows and recently played tracks, and you paste them in with a short piece of code. See the widgets tutorial.

Get listed in directories

Directories are how many people discover new stations. Submit yours where you can, with a good description, accurate genre and a clear logo. Our guide to the SHOUTcast directory is a good starting point, and there are other listings and aggregators worth looking at for your genre and region.

Be on at predictable times

People build habits around schedules. If listeners know the Friday show starts at eight, they will plan for it. Publish your timetable on your radio page, in your posts and on a widget. Even a station that is mostly automated can run a weekly live slot that gives regulars something to look forward to.

Give people a reason to share

Use social media sensibly

You do not need to be on every platform. Pick one or two where your listeners already spend time, and post consistently: what is on now, what is next, a clip from a show, a thank-you to a listener. Short clips of your best moments are easy to share.

Look at your listener stats

Your control panel shows who is listening. Use it to see when your audience peaks, which of your shows hold people, and where they are. Then adjust: move a popular show to a better slot, or aim a campaign at the country that is already listening. A country-stats widget can even show visitors where your audience is from.

Keep the quality up

Growth fades if the experience is poor. Fix dead air, uneven volume and repeated tracks. A reliable network helps as your audience grows, and we explain what sits behind each Citrus3 plan in why premium bandwidth matters.

Be patient, and be consistent

Most stations grow slowly, then notice a tipping point when regulars start telling others. The stations that get there are the ones that kept turning up. If you would like to earn from your audience once it forms, read how to make money from your station.
