Seven questions to answer before you launch your station

If you are about to start an internet station, you probably have the same handful of questions as everybody else. Here are seven of the most common, with honest answers.

1. Do I need technical skills?

No. A good host gives you a control panel where you upload music, set a schedule and see your listeners, with no server knowledge needed. If you can use email, you can run a station. Our tutorials go through each task one step at a time.

2. How much does it cost?

There are two kinds of cost: hosting, which is a monthly fee and depends on the audience and features you need, and everything else, such as a microphone, headphones and your time. Look at our plans to see what each level includes, and remember that you can change as you grow.

3. What equipment do I need?

For an automated station, a computer is enough. For live shows, add a microphone and headphones. We list the essentials in the equipment guide.

4. Can I run it without being there all day?

Yes, with an AutoDJ. It plays your library and your schedule around the clock, and you can go live whenever you wish. Read radio automation explained.

5. How will people listen?

On a link to your radio page, on a player embedded in a website, and on a mobile app if your plan includes one. Listeners need no special software.

6. How many listeners can I have?

That depends on your plan and on your bitrate, which affects how much data each listener uses. Pick a plan that matches the audience you are aiming for, and leave some room to grow.

7. How do I get listeners?

Slowly and steadily: a clear identity, a reliable schedule, a way to listen in one click and consistent promotion. See how to grow your audience.

One more: what about music rights?

It is a question worth asking early and answering for your own country, so look into it before you broadcast music.
